Silver Nights {Part 1}

Back in July, I went through a giant reading slump.  (Stay with me here, I'll explain myself in a moment).  During this giant reading slump, all I wanted to do was watch Hallmark Christmas movies.  Which worked out because it was Christmas in July, so they were playing pretty much constantly.  In all of the fluffy feels and cozy aesthetics, I got the urge to write a Christmas short story.  Turned out that I had the perfect plot bunny to convert to Christmas, and thus, the story of Sam and Lucy became what it is now.  And tbh, I'm obsessed with it.

There are 4 parts, each around 1500 words, that tell a totally self-indulgent story full of fluff, Christmas cookies, and the warmth of the season.  Since it's Christmas Eve (Merry Christmas Eve, by the way!!), consider it my gift to you.  I sincerely hope you have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.

Sam Nichols loves everything to do with Christmas.
Then he quite literally bumps into a girl named Lucy who might just be his soulmate...
if he believed in such a thing.

And without further ado, here we go... enjoy part 1 of Silver Nights!

PART ONE
December, 2017

Sam was late.  He knew it, and probably everyone else on the street did too.  With the large tote bags he was carrying and the coat that dangled from only one arm, he might as well have plastered a sign on his forehead that read: I AM LATE FOR SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE GET OUT OF MY WAY.

Snow and slush had been pushed to the edges of the sidewalk, but he still made sure to step carefully even while he hurried.  The line at Minnie’s Craft Supplies had been longer than he’d anticipated as the holidays approached.  He darted around people like a fish moving upstream, nodding to each one who said, “Hey, Sam.”  Frost River was on the large side of being a small town, but since Sam’s uncle employed half the locals, there weren’t many he didn’t know.

He was nodding to Mr. Friar, who ran the supermarket, when he misstepped and another body slammed into him.  A large pine wreath, two tote bags of decor, and Sam's hat went flying across the sidewalk.  Sam found himself sitting rather suddenly as his boots slipped out from under him, and staring into a pair of startled green eyes.

"Oh my goodness!" exclaimed the voice behind the eyes, a girl with bright gold hair and a lovely green coat. "I'm so sorry!" She tucked some of the hair behind her ear and started scrambling to pick up the wreath.

"Oh, no, please," Sam's voice finally decided to work, "it was my fault."

"Well, I wasn't exactly watching where I was going either." Her face flushed as she looped the wreath over her shoulder.  "I really am sorry."

"It's no trouble, miss. No trouble at all." He smiled, fumbling blindly for his bags, which had somehow managed to stay upright.  The girl gave him a small smile in return, snagging his hat as it tried to tumble away in the breeze.

"Here," she placed it on his head.

"Thank you."  They stared at each other for a moment, then the girl cleared her throat.

"Well, sorry again." She stood, brushing off her knees and holding out her free hand to help him up.  Sam grasped it, small but stronger than it looked, and realized that he remembered he was late, but couldn't for the life of him think what for.  He could only think about the fact that this was a stranger.

"What's your name?" He asked, his voice soft.

She readjusted her greenery and said, "Lucy. I'm Lucy."

"Well, Miss Lucy, it's been a pleasure, ah… bumping into you."  They laughed at the joke.  “I’m Sam.”

"It was nice to bump into you, Sam.”  She smiled fully, and his breath caught.  “You should probably get going," she said, gesturing at his large bags. “Christmas decorating waits for no one."

"Oh… yes," he readjusted his hat.  Part of him couldn't understand why the other part wanted nothing more in the world than to stay here, in this moment, with her and him and her wreath and his hat. But the part of him that wished for this to never end caught something in her eye that made him wonder if maybe, just maybe, she felt it too.

“Have a nice day Miss Lucy.”

   “Same to you, Mister Sam.”

-

Jingle bells rattled as Sam pushed open the door to Nichols Delivery Services, which operated out of his uncle’s large Colonial-style home.  The front entrance and parlor had been converted into an office with plush chairs and a large oak desk.  The smooth harmonies of Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters echoed from the bluetooth-connected jukebox in the corner, crooning about the holidays in Hawaii.

Sam winced as he peeled off his coat.  A green and bright Christmas sounded nice right about now.

“Gosh, what happened to you?”  Micah stood from behind the desk so that Sam could take his normal post.  Sam grimaced.

“An ice patch and I had a misunderstanding.”  He hung his coat by the door and set his bags atop the desk.  “Thanks for covering for me.”

“What are big brothers for?”  Micah shrugged.  “Need some ice for that?”

“Oh, haha.” Sam shoved him toward the back of the house.  “Don’t you have something else to do?”

“Yes, believe it or not, I have a job of my own.  Holler if you need help.”

And so Sam was alone with the jukebox and his own thoughts as he unpacked the bags.  He bobbed his head in time to Amy Grant’s “Jingle Bell Rock” and popped into the kitchen to get some instant cocoa.  Micah had stacked colorful plastic tubs of decor by the desk, and soon various ornaments and decorations soon littered the room as Sam laid out where he wanted everything to go.  Decorating the office for Christmas was a very important duty, and he was honored to have been trusted with it.  But he found himself distracted even while he debated whether to put the gold sparkly reindeer statue next to the left or right chair.

Lucy. What a perfectly perfect name.  His grandmother's, actually.  But the differences between Grandma Lucy and Green-coat Lucy were many.

He blinked those thoughts away.  Right corner for the reindeer, with an oversized present next to it.  This, he could control.

Several strings of lights had been taped up and plugged in when the door bells jingled and Sam looked up.  Green-coat Lucy stood there, looking at him in surprise, with the wreath, now covered in sparkly baubles, in her arms.

"Hello again!" She said, cocking her head.

"Hello yourself!" He got down off the chair he’d been balancing on.  "What brings you here?"

"I, uh, have an interview with Mr. Nichols?"

"Oh…" he rubbed his forehead as he laughed. "You're the new financial manager."

"I hope to be, anyway." She smiled. "I didn't know you worked here."

"Worse - my folks own the place."

   "Sam Nichols, then."

He put his hands up in fake surrender. "Guilty as charged."

She held out the wreath. “Lucy James.  I was told that bringing a decoration was a requirement for the interview.” Her voice held a smile.

“That sounds like Uncle George.” He took the wreath.  “He’ll be impressed; he expected the candidates to show up with a cheap ornament at most.”

“Christmas deserves the best,” she shrugged.  “Hopefully he isn’t less impressed when he learns that I used that to knock you over.”  With a little wince, she gave him an apologetic look.  “Sorry about that.”

“Hey, no worries.”  Sam held the wreath up so it sparkled in the sunlight from the window.  “You did a great job with this.”

“Thank you!” Her eyes lit up a little as she looked at her creation. “I had fun doing it.”

“You shouldn’t miss the Christmas festival.” He went to the bins to grab a wreath hanger while he talked.  “Millie hosts the crafting booth every year, and you can make all sorts of things like more wreaths or tree toppers or whatever.  Here, hold this.”  He handed the wreath back to her as he hopped back up onto the chair.  The hanger fit over the curtain rod and Lucy passed him the wreath.

“A little to the left,” she waved her hand until he had it straight, then gave him a thumbs-up.  He stepped down and back and took in the view.

   “Looks perfect.”

She gave him another small smile and glanced around the office.

“This whole place looks pretty perfect.  Did you do this yourself?”

“Yeah, decoration duty was on me this year.  I love it, though.  Like you said, Christmas deserves the best.”

They grinned at each other before he snapped his fingers.

“The interview.  You’re… here for the interview, let me get Uncle George.”  Sam turned on his heel and hurried toward the stairs in the foyer.

“Sam!” Lucy called after him, and he skidded to a stop so he could turn around.

   “Yeah?”

“I’d love to go to the Christmas festival.  Maybe you could show me around.”

His brain froze for a second as he caught the twinkle in her green eyes, before he spluttered out, “Yeah… sure thing.”

And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed! Have a very merry Christmas Eve, and be on the lookout for part 2 coming in the next few days!

My Must-Watch Christmas Movies {12 Days of Christmas}

You know those movies where it isn't Christmas until you've watched them?  Yeah, it's these for me.

Today, we're chatting about those movies that just make Christmas Christmas.  And personally, I think I've got some pretty iconic ones.

- White Christmas -

I mean, does it get any better than Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye?  No, no it does not.

- A Charlie Brown Christmas -

Why yes I do cry every time Linus does his Scripture monologue.

- Muppet Christmas Carol -

I will also cry every time Tiny Tim starts to sing "Bless Us All" and I have no shame.

- The Year Without a Santa Claus -

Three reasons I love this movie:
1) Mrs. Claus kicking butt
2) Vixen being generally adorable
3) The Miser brothers' songs ('cause they're absolute bops)

- It's a Wonderful Life -

You don't get more iconic or aesthetic than this classic.

- The Nativity Story -

Because, of course, this is what it's all about.

And there you have it!  What are your must-watch Christmas movies?  Do we share any favorites?  Let me know in the comments!

The Best of Hallmark Christmas Take 2 {12 Days of Christmas}

Welcome back to the 12 Days of Christmas!  (Or more like 7 around here... oops xD)  Today, I'll be recommending some of my favorite "comfort" movies; that's right, we're talking Hallmark!

Now I don't know about you, but there's something about Hallmark Christmas movies that just brings me joy.  Maybe it's the typical small-town charm, maybe it's the predictable romance, I don't know why exactly I love them, I just know I do.  So here are 8 of my favorites.  (And hey, be proud of me, only one of these involves a royal. ... most of my faves with royals are on this list here, if you wanna know what those are, lol)

- One Royal Holiday -

We'll go ahead and start with the royals since this film features my favorite queen of any Hallmark movie hands down.  She's so cool, lol.  This movie was a ton of fun, and starred some true Broadway royalty in Laura Osnes, Aaron Tveit, Victoria Clark, and Krystal Joy Brown, which led to some truly gorgeous singing scenes that made my Broadway-loving heart SO happy.  Plus, the story was adorable, which is always a plus.

- Write Before Christmas -

Chad Michael Murray Hallmark movies can be hit-or-miss for me, but this is by far my favorite.  It follows Jessica, who writes five Christmas cards to the people who shaped her life, and each of those cards, in turn, changes them for the better.  This one's just so sweet and lovely and gives me all the warm fuzzy feelings <3

- The Christmas Bow -

This one is new this year, and it's maybe among my top 3 Hallmark movies ever, man.  I just adored everything about it.  The lead actress is actually a ridiculously talented violinist, Michael Rady is one of my favorite Hallmark leads (and this isn't the only time he's on this list), the story was unique, and I cried both times I watched it.  If I could recommend just one movie from this year's line-up, it would probably be this one.  (Also Gavin is #bestwingman and I love him, lol)

- Small Town Christmas -

Love story between an author and a bookstore owner?  Check.  Small town with an obsession with Christmas?  Check.  Love interest is the guardian of an adorable young child?  Check.  Kristoffer Polaha in sweaters?  Check.  Yep, it's a great one.

- Cranberry Christmas -

I didn't mean to put all the Movies & Mysteries recs together, but here we are. xD  This one was so unique!  Unlike most Hallmark movies, this one follows a married couple who have fallen out of love, but end up having to act like they're happily married in order to secure business for their small town.  And I absolutely adored it.  Nikki Deloach and Benjamin Ayres have excellent chemistry, and I'm just wondering how they've never done a movie together before, lol.

- Christmas Waltz -

Say hello to my favorite Lacey Chabert movie since A Royal Christmas.  This one was so charming!  Was it the most realistic?  No, but I don't exactly come to Hallmark movies for them to make logical sense, am I right?  The dancing was so fun, and I actually thought the plot was pretty unique!  (Also can we talk about how proud I was that technically she broke up with her fiancé at the start of the film instead of the other way around?  Because yes, girl!)

- Two Turtle Doves -

See, I told you Michael Rady would be back!  This one gives me ALL the feels, as both the main characters deal with grief and find comfort in Christmas.  I laugh and I cry and it brings me so much joy.

- Christmas Town -

Candace had to make at least one appearance on this list, right?  This is one of my all-time Hallmark faves, another one that has all the feels.  I adore the adoption storyline, it's so sweet!

And there you have it!  I think the lesson we've learned today is that some of the Hallmark movies coming out this year are so good, and I'm so glad.  I needed some good Christmas movies this year, y'know?

Make sure you check out the other 12 Days of Christmas posts from today!

Have you seen any of these movies?  Let me know what you thought in the comments below!

The Joy of Christmas Book Tag {12 Days of Christmas}

It's that time of year again! The 12 Days of Christmas Link-up is back!!

I said to myself, earlier this year, "self, if Faith does 12 Days of Christmas again, we're going to participate."  Spoiler alert, Faith did indeed decide to host it again, and thus, we find ourselves here.  I'm pretty hyped, and I hope you are too!

We're starting simple, with a book tag that I stole from my awesome friend Rachel, because what is Christmas for if not stealing tags from people you admire?

Let's jump on in!

1) Anticipation:
The Christmas excitement is real; What release(s) are you most anticipating?

There are quite a few!  I think the top one has to be Lament, though.  I've been looking forward to this one since I read the first book last year!  Also, can we talk about this cover?? *heart eyes*

2) Christmas Songs & Carols:
What author can you not help but sing its praises?

I've got to hand it to Marissa Meyer, the Lunar Chronicles are a masterpiece.  Each one wouldn't let me go, her characters are full and real, she's the queen of that old writer advice of "what's the worst thing that could happen to your character? do that thing" because WOW do the characters go through some stuff.

3) Gingerbread Houses:
What book or series has wonderful world-building?

No one builds a world quite like Tricia Mingerink.  Especially in her Beyond the Tales series.  Tallahatchia is a fascinating world that I've so enjoyed getting to explore more in each book of the series!

4) A Christmas Carol:
Favorite classic (or one that you want to read)

This one, luckily, is actually pretty easy for me, seeing as it's my favorite book of all time.  I adore The Magician's Nephew, and the whole Narnia series, with all of my heart.

5) Christmas Sweets:
What book would you love to receive for Christmas?

There are quite a few indie-published books that I would love to see under the tree this Christmas, and this lovely one (and the rest of its series) is definitely on that list.  (You can check out my full review to see how much I loved it, lol)

6) Candle in the Window:
What book gives you the warm, fuzzy feelings?

Every one of Tara Grace Ericson's books have given me all the warm fuzzies, but especially Poppy's Proposal.  Something about that friends-to-lovers, marriage-of-convenience plot, man.

7) Christmas Trees & Decorations:
What are some of your favorite book covers?

I mean?? Can you even??

8) Christmas Joy:
What are some of your favorite things about Christmas
and/or some of your favorite Christmas tradition?

- Opening presents at our house on Christmas Eve, and then at our grandparents' house on Christmas Day.
- Watching White Christmas with my sister at the beginning of the season.
- Listening to all my favorite Christmas music.
- Just... the feeling in the air.
- Like, the world is happier for a bit.
- People are kinder.
- There's a joy around in the decorations and the music and the fake snow (FL life, lol)
- I don't know how to describe it, but just the feeling of Christmas is my favorite.

And there we have it!  Welcome to the 12 Days of Christmas! (it's actually more like 7 for me, but go with it, haha)  Make sure you check out all the other amazing posts

The Isles {blog tour + book review}

Hello again, my friends!  It's blog tour time again! *cue the happy dance*

Today I bring you a review of a sci-fi book that had me hooked from the first page.  With the recent release of the third book in the trilogy, Sara Francis put together a blog tour celebrating all things "Terra Testimonies", and I'm so excited to be a part of it today!  Check out this link right here to see the other awesome posts!

And with that, let's jump on in!

The Isles

Author: Sara Francis
Genre: Sci-fi/Dystopian
Content: Some intense action
Main Characters: Alison, Sami, and Aaron

Synopsis:
The Invader's left the world in ruin. Their first worldwide devastation, named the Accident, was unforeseen by everyone. Well, almost. Seven men knew of the approaching destruction and acted by preparing six islands as a place of refuge. Rescuing thousands of people, these Keepers decided to get the next generation ready for war; in their own way. Through training, experimentation, and study, the men created an army of young Bionics, Mutants, geeks, doctors, farmers, and militia to fight the battle.
However, things do not go as planned.
Alison is a Bionic who still has faint memories of her past life. These memories continue to haunt her and make her doubt the Keepers who saved her from an explosion eight years ago. She knows in her gut that something else is afoot, but cannot find out what. On the other hand, Sami and Aaron, a Mutant and a geek, have absolutely no memory of the world before and continue to do as they are told. Despite their obedience, their suspicions are aroused repeatedly and cannot shake the feeling of uncertainty.
The flame of these teens’ doubts is fanned by one interesting character that subtly creates chaos on the Isles.
Read the record logs of Alison, Sami, and Aaron and join them on their journey to find the truth in their islands of lies. Follow them on their adventure as they put themselves in the lines of danger and learn to use their abilities in combat. The roller coaster of suspicions will have you on the edge of your seat until these teenagers find the answer and do something about it.

What I Thought:

Well that was quite the ride!  I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this, and now, having read it, I don't think I ever actually looked at the synopsis?  Which in some ways made this more fun.

I'm definitely a character-driven reader - I have to love the characters if I'm going to love the book, and I'm happy to report that these did not disappoint.  The story is told in the journal entries of our leads, Alison, Sami, and Aaron, each of which I loved from the beginning.  They're surrounded by a slew of interesting side characters, some good, some bad, most a mystery.

The world of the Isles was a fascinating one to look into, and one I very much want to explore more of.  The darkness isn't shied away from, but there's light too.  Hope, and its power, is woven throughout the story, which I always appreciate.

The only thing I struggled with was the sheer number of characters.  I'm all for a big cast, but where the Heroes of Olympus have their Seven, the Isles have their Seventeen.  And my brain sometimes struggled with keeping that many heroes straight. (not to mention the various other characters, villain or otherwise, who all have unique names but I cannot for the life of me remember who is who xD)  But I will say that the cast was super diverse, and each character did have enough to distinguish them that I eventually got the hang of it.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with this book!  It was unique, the plot was well-paced, the story was intriguing.  I cried at the end, which is always great.  (No, I don't know if I'll ever forgive Sara for certain character deaths, but that's a story for another day xD)

Overall Rating: 4 bucket helmets out of 5  ((Donnie is my favorite, lol))

What I Thought:

This was such a pleasant surprise!  I've never read anything from Michaela before, though I've had my eye on her books for awhile now.  And since I'm always down for a new Rapunzel retelling, this seemed like the perfect place to start.

Evangeline's story was wonderful, heart-wrenching and soul-filling.  With a unique storyline that kept me hooked, and a ridiculously soft romance that I fell in love with, it paid perfect homage to the original fairytale, but wove in a story of God's love and deliverance beautifully.

The evil "mother" was awful, which, in a way, makes her a great villain.  I haven't seen many Rapunzel retellings truly deal with the abuse that she suffers at the hands of the witch, but this one explored it, and Evangeline's realization of it, in a great way.

Also I gotta talk about Gabriel because OH man I love him. xD I'm always a sucker for the protective but respectful boy, and he's no exception.  The way he cares for Eva is so darn sweet and lovely and I just adore them together. <3 I'd happily read a sequel, even though I don't think there will be one.

Ultimately, I really enjoyed myself while reading, and I'd happily recommend it to anyone who loves Disney's Tangled, soft romances, and girls who learn to stand up for themselves.

Overall Rating: 5 baby birds out of 5

The 2020 Diaries (what I've been up to pt. 2)

The funny thing about hiatuses on this blog is that I never mean to take them, it just... happens.  It's been almost 2 months since I posted last.  Sorry about that.  Today, I'm here to catch you up.

Like many of my fellow humans, 2020 has been a whirlwind of a year.  Adding to the pressure is a massive life change in which my grandmother sold her house and moved into an apartment while we try and find a house for all of us to live in.  It's just been...  a lot... *burrows beneath pillows* I'm fine.

No seriously, I'm doing okay.  Although, apparently, since I blogged last I've just... lost the ability to use gifs?  Idk what's going on with Blogger but hopefully it rights itself soon.

In the meantime, let's take a look at what's been up since we last spoke.

  • I re-read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, and it's been confirmed as one of my favorite books of all time.  Seriously.  This book is so good.

  • I binged all 7 seasons of New Girl, which I absolutely loved.  I can't recommend it to everyone because the writers decide to go back to sex waaaaay too much, but I haven't laughed so hard at a show in a long time.  I am simultaneously Nick, Jess, and Winston always.

  • For my birthday, the thing I wanted most was to go to the local library.  The week of my b-day was also the week of my grandmother's house closing, which meant I didn't get any sort of celebration outside of going to the library, renewing my card, and wandering the aisles to bring home a stack of books I probably won't have time to read.  But the JOY I felt was... a little ridiculous, if I'm being honest with myself.  I felt like my 10-year-old self again and it was delightful.

  • Speaking of the library, while I was there I picked up The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing by Sheila Turnage, which is the second Mo and Dale mystery.  And if you're in the market for the most wholesome ghost story you'll ever read, look no further.  I adore this series so much, it made me laugh out loud several times, and I can't wait to read the next two books.

  • As previously mentioned, my family is trying to find a house.  The good news is that, as of when I'm writing this, we've found one!  And while nothing's set in stone yet, there's a good chance we'll be moving again in the next month or so (which is like... not fun.  but we're all so ready to be in our forever home that it's okay)

  • I've spend the last few months working on a very exciting, very Christmas-y story that I'm calling Silver Nights, that will be coming to the blog this December!  I can't wait to share Sam and Lucy's story with y'all - it's a Hallmark-style love story that's completely self-indulgent and very fluffy.  It's exactly what I've needed, tbh.  (And don't worry, Bonnie and Clyde are still around.  They're getting jealous and want me to spend more time with them.  Which I will, as soon as I'm done with this xD)

And I think that's most of the big things!  Blogging fell to the wayside, and for that I apologize.  I've been in a weird mental space, as most of us probably are, and it was just the first thing to go.  But! Hopefully, I can get back into a rhythm of actually posting again.  I've got some books to review and some tags to do and anything is possible.

Okay that's all for now.  See ya soon, hopefully.
